How to keep a real Christmas tree fresh
Updated October 2026
A real tree is a living plant that’s been cut off from its roots. Keeping it watered is the single most important thing you can do.
When you get home
- Make a fresh cut. Saw a thin slice (around 2–3 cm) off the bottom of the trunk. This opens it up to take in water. If the farm has already drilled the base for a spike stand, check with them first.
- Stand it in water straight away. If it’s not coming inside yet, put it in a bucket of water outside in a sheltered, shady spot.
- Use a water-holding stand. Choose one that holds plenty of water and fits the trunk without shaving the bark off the sides.
Indoors
- Keep it away from heat. Radiators, fires and wood burners dry a tree out fast.
- Top up every day. A fresh tree can drink a surprising amount in the first few days. Never let the water level fall below the base of the trunk, or the cut can seal and stop taking water.
- Plain water is fine. You don’t need sugar, aspirin or other additives.
- Turn lights off when you go out or to bed.
Signs it’s drying out
Needles that snap rather than bend, branches that droop, and a pile of needles under the tree all mean it’s struggling. Check the water first.
