How to recycle your real Christmas tree
Updated October 2026
Real trees can be chipped and composted, so with a bit of planning they don’t need to go to landfill.
1. Council collection or drop-off
Most UK councils offer some way to recycle real trees in January: a special collection, extra space in garden waste bins, or drop-off points at parks or recycling centres. Arrangements differ between councils and change from year to year, so search your council’s website for “Christmas tree recycling” in late December.
Before it goes: remove all decorations, tinsel and lights, take it off its stand, and cut it into pieces if your council asks you to.
2. Charity collections
In many areas, local charities and hospices collect trees in early January for a donation. Search for “Christmas tree collection” plus your town.
3. Garden waste bin or home compost
If you have a garden waste collection, you can usually cut the tree up to fit the bin. Small branches can go on a compost heap, though needles break down slowly.
4. Replant a potted tree
Pot-grown trees can go back outside after Christmas. Keep them in a cool room while indoors and move them out promptly. Expect some not to survive.
What not to do
- Don’t burn a tree on an open fire or wood burner. Resinous wood can cause tar build-up.
- Don’t leave it on the pavement unless your council has told you to.
